Iridescent Plumage

Juvenile Anna's Hummingbird

Juvenile Anna’s Hummingbird (Probably)

Every year in late January or February, hummingbirds begin to enjoy the camellia bush planted in our front yard. Later in the season, they show their appreciation for our flowering quinces and cherry blossoms. I’ve seen a few types of hummingbirds around, but I can’t easily tell the juveniles apart. Is this an Anna’s Hummingbird, Rufous, or perhaps a Red-Throated Hummingbird?

The Lizard Hunter

Northern Alligator Lizard

Northwestern Alligator Lizard

She’s back at it! Granite, our shy she-cat, continues to display a preference for hunting reptiles and amphibians, to the exclusion of furry prey. Today she brought in an alligator lizard — you may recall her previous adventures with garter snakes and frogs. The lizard only had a small hole in it, so I let it back outside to enjoy the sun.
